The following abbreviations are used throughout this book in source citations.
PG — Patrologia Graeca (Patrologiae Cursus Completus, Series Graeca). Edited by Jacques-Paul Migne, Paris, 1857-1866. 161 volumes containing the works of the Greek Church Fathers from the apostolic era to the fall of Constantinople (1453). Citations follow the format PG volume:column (e.g., PG 99:1017 = volume 99, column 1017).
PL — Patrologia Latina (Patrologiae Cursus Completus, Series Latina). Edited by Jacques-Paul Migne, Paris, 1841-1855, with later indices published in the 1860s. 217 volumes containing the works of the Latin Church Fathers from Tertullian to Pope Innocent III. Citations follow the same format as PG.
NPNF — Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers. Edited by Philip Schaff and Henry Wace, 1886-1900. Two series of English translations: Series 1 (14 volumes, major works of St. Augustine and St. John Chrysostom) and Series 2 (14 volumes, other Fathers and ecumenical council documents).
